Émeline Sauser is 26 years old. After a hypokhâgne and khâgne in Lyon, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in history in Santiago, Chile. She then spent several years traveling. In 2023, she graduated from the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography course at ÉMI-CFD in Paris. Photography enables her to address some of her obsessions, such as wandering, dreams, death, the links between humans and non-humans, and the need for consolation and refuge.
“Refuges is a work based on 3 stories of reconstruction. This “residence on earth”, as Pablo Neruda put it, is strange and often difficult. It’s when things get complicated that human beings demonstrate a rage for life that comes from within, and which sometimes resembles a miracle.
What I’m looking for here is the aftermath of the storm, the moment when you have to summon your strength to keep from going under.
Each of these stories is first and foremost the fruit of an encounter. Their starting point is my admiration for the life force of these human beings. They stubbornly seek a little peace. Very often, the refuge is other people, love, bonds. Love to a degree that escapes us and is almost magical. This work is a collaboration with the people photographed. Together, we search for those infinitely fragile moments of grace. For an instant, everything responds and unites.”
